Prof. Erasmus H. Owusu

Prof. Erasmus Henaku Owusu is a foremost ecologist, biodiversity specialist, and environmental policy advisor with over two decades of research, academic, and programme experience spanning West Africa and beyond. At Ecozak Africa, he leads the Biodiversity and Ecosystems Assessment Division, where he provides scientific direction for ecosystem diagnostics, nature-based restoration strategies, and biodiversity integration across infrastructure, conservation, and climate resilience projects.

A globally respected thought leader in tropical ecology, Prof. Owusu holds a PhD in Biodiversity Management (Conservation Biology) from the University of Kent, and has served in pivotal academic and advisory roles including as Director of the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, Director of the Centre for African Wetlands and Head of the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science at the University of Ghana.

His expertise bridges the interface between rigorous ecological science and real-world application, guiding governments, multilateral institutions, and private sector actors on how to integrate biodiversity values into policy, planning, and investment decisions. He has advised on numerous national biodiversity strategies, ecosystem valuation frameworks, and nature-positive transition plans for development sectors including energy, agriculture, mining, and urban development.

Prof. Owusu is also a mentor and academic supervisor to a generation of African conservation scientists, and his research contributions have shaped discourse on migratory birds, ecosystem services, and wetland conservation across Africa.
